Object Description
1816 Sampler by Mary Ann Toynton. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Fixed to linen with and card with chip board backing. The sampler is worked in silk and wool on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Zig zag border. Colours greens, cream, light brown, copper, gold, pink and black. Verse reads, ‘While youthfull fancy forms the letters fair,>Let me great God be thy peculiar care,>Subdue the eviel of my natal hour,>Direct my steps, uphold me by thy pow’r.>Nor e’er let vice eclipse the heavenly spark.>Oh_teach me virtue while I learn to work.’. Signed and dated, ‘MARY ANN TOYNTON. AGED 10 YEARS 1816’. A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a basket of flowers, a large lion, a bird, flowers, butterflies and a fir tree.
