1821 Castle Sampler by Mary Skirrow. Framed in an old, gilt over wood frame, with rippled, old glass. Fixed to linen with chipboard backing. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours browns, cream, blue, red, pale blue, white, greens and black. Verse reads ‘Reason’s whole pleasure, all the joys of sense>Lie in three words, health, peace, and competence>But health consists with temperance alone>And peace, O virtue peace is all thy own’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Skirrow Octbr 8th 1821’. A good set of motifs, including a castle, fir trees, stags and a spaniel.
