Antique Sampler, 1821, by Susanna Farrow. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, copper, gold, silver, dark brown and blue. Verse entitled ‘WISDOM’ reads, ‘One thing I ask; and wilt thou hear, And grant my soul a gift so dear? Wisdom descending from above; The choicest token of thy love. PRUDENCE’. Signed and dated ‘Susanna Farrow Hogsthorpe Finished This Work June-22nd 1821 Aged 15 Years.”. Placename Hogsthorpe is a small village in Lincolnshire, England. A wonderful set of motifs, including a well dressed female figure holding a rope, a stag, dogs, flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, birds and lions.
