Object Description

Antique Sampler, 1821, by Susanna Farrow. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, copper, gold, silver, dark brown and blue. Verse entitled ‘WISDOM’ reads, ‘One thing I ask; and wilt thou hear, And grant my soul a gift so dear? Wisdom descending from above; The choicest token of thy love. PRUDENCE’. Signed and dated ‘Susanna Farrow Hogsthorpe Finished This Work June-22nd 1821 Aged 15 Years.”. Placename Hogsthorpe is a small village in Lincolnshire, England. A wonderful set of motifs, including a well dressed female figure holding a rope, a stag, dogs, flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, birds and lions. Framed in a 20thC Hogarth frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is loose mounted onto a linen backing. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Generally Good. A number of holes, masked by the linen backing. Slight darkening of the ground in the top left corner. No stitch losses. A loose thread, by one plant pot. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ‘as is’.
