Object Description
1824 Sampler by Mary Richards aged 13. The sampler is finely worked in silk on a linen ground. Meandering strawberry border. Colours black, blue, green, gold, silver, brown and pink. Signed and dated, ‘Mary Richards Finished This March 18th 1824 Aged 13 Years’. A wonderful set of motifs, the main subject being a scene with a boy sat on the back of a dog. Either side are trees and swans on a pond. Other motifs including fir trees, crowns, dogs and potted flowering plants. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
