Object Description
Regency Sampler, 1825, by Mary Walter. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, dark brown, white, blue and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-13. Verse reads, ‘Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand, In the first employment of Marys hand. And while my fingers on the canvass move, Engage my sinful heart to seek they love’. Signed and dated, ‘Mary Walter Oct 18 1825’. A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, fruit baskets, potted flowering plants, acorns, crowns, hearts, angels, squirrels and fir trees. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with card and sealed.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
