Object Description
1831 Sampler ‘Behold the Man’ by Sarah Evans. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to wood with brown paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, green, pink, brown and blue. Verse entitled, ‘BEHOLD THE MAN’ reads, ‘ SEE, there! His temples crown’d with thorn,> His bleeding hands extended wide,> His streaming feet transfixt and torn> The fountain gushing from his side!> Tis done! The precious ransom’s paid, > Receive my soul, he cries:> See where he bows his sacred head!> He bows his head, and dies!’. Signed and dated ‘Sarah Evans Work Aged 11 1831’. A good set of motifs, including Jesus on the cross, moon, stars, birds, animals and trees.
