Object Description

1834 Sampler by Charlotte Needle. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours brown, green, gold and black. Verse reads ‘Jesus permit thy gracious naem to stand,>As the first effort of a youthful hand,>And while her fingers oe’er the canvass move,>Engage her tender heart to seek thy love,>With thy dear children may she share a part,>And write thy name thyself upon her heart’. Signed and dated ‘Charlotte Needle, 1834.’. A scattering of motifs, including fruit baskets, dogs, a house, flowers, fir trees and crowns.

Object Condition

Fair. A few small holes and some loss of ground to the bottom, right corner. A few patchy stains and stain specks. Stitch losses to the border and motifs. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
