Object Description
1836 North Curry School Sampler by Mary Jane Hembrow. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, cream, black, brown and blue. Verse reads ‘Thus children we earnestly pray> That you may be blest from above> That mercy and peace from your God> May fill all your hearts with his love’. Signed with initials and dated ‘Mary Jane Hembrow completed this Sampler at North Curry School March 10th 1836 in the 13th Year of her Age’. Unusual set of motifs, including ‘Burton Monument’, birds, potted flowering plants, deer, fir trees, trees, a house and butterflies.
