Object Description
1837 Sampler by Mary Mewburn. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, light brown, pink, gold and black. Verse reads ‘Youth if set right at first with ease go on>And each new task is with new pleasure done>But if neglected till they grow in years>And each fond mother her dear darling spares>Errors become habitual and you’ll find>T’is then hard labour to reform the mind’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Mewburn Aged 11 Years 1837’. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, crowns, a star and butterflies.
