The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, cream, light brown, pink, gold and black. Verse reads ‘Youth if set right at first with ease go on>And each new task is with new pleasure done>But if neglected till they grow in years>And each fond mother her dear darling spares>Errors become habitual and you’ll find>T’is then hard labour to reform the mind’. Signed and dated ‘Mary Mewburn Aged 11 Years 1837’. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, dogs, birds, potted flowering plants, crowns, a star and butterflies.

Good. A number of holes, mostly to the extreme edges. A few pale patchy stains, barely visible. Very minor stitch loss to the border. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
