Antique Sampler, 1837, Woodcock by Mary Staley. The sampler is worked in fine wool on a linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours red, blue, pink, green and brown. Signed and dated ‘Mary Ann Staleys Work 1837’. Titled, ‘The Chinese Woodcock’. A wonderful central motif of a bird perched in tree, carrying a flowering branch in it’s beak.Framed in an old, possibly original, black ebonised wood frame, with rippled old glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to linen and stretched over board. Frame backed with paper.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
