Object Description
Victorian Sampler, stitched in 1839 by Elizabeth Higgins Aged 14. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering floral border. Colours green, light brown, dark brown, gold, pink, silver and blue. Verse reads, ‘When I lay me down to sleep, I give my soul to Christ to keep, Wake I at morn or wake I never, I give my soul to Christ for ever.’. Also, inscriptions, ‘God is love’ and, ‘By grace are ye saved through faith.’. Signed and dated, ‘Elizabeth Higgins Aged 14 Years 1839’. A wonderful set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, a castle, a house with a garden, birds, another house, stags, fruit baskets, fir trees, squirrels and butterflies. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is backed with acid free white paper and tacked to wooden board. Frame backed with paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
