Object Description

1839 Sampler by Mary Rowlands. Framed in a modern black and gilt frame with glass. Fixed to linen with card backing. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Decorative border. Colours greens, cream, yellow, copper and white. Signed and dated, ‘Mary Rowlands her Work Aged 11 1839’. A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life, with a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, hearts, ships, stags and owls

Object Condition

Generally Good. A number of holes to the top edge, tack holes from a previous mounting. Slight staining to the top edge. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
