Object Description
Victorian Sampler, 1842, by Ann Minter Aged 8 Years. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, light brown, copper, gold, silver, pink and navy blue. Signed and dated, ‘Ann Minter Finished This Sampler Dec.r 28 Aged 8 Years } 1842’. Unusual set of motifs, including a large central flower with two caterpillars and an insect (aphid?) beside. This is perhaps a flowering vegetable plant that is being attacked by insect pests. Something that was on the young girls mind at the time. Also birds, potted flowering plants, squirrels, fir trees, trees, fruit baskets, hearts and crowns. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to paper. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.
