Object Description

1843 Arnold Sampler by Elizabeth Mattock. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Fixed to card with wood backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours green, blue, red, black, pink, purple, white and brown. Verse reads ‘Jesus. Permit thy graciuos name to stand…> As the first effort of an infant,s hand …> And while her fingers o,er this canvas move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her share a part> And write thy name thyself upon her heart’. Signed and dated ‘Elizabeth Mattock Aged 9 Years 1843’. Placename Arnold is a town in Nottinghamshire, England. A good set of motifs, including a lady and a gentleman, a building, dogs, birds, flowers, fruit baskets, peacocks, owls and a dovecote.

Object Condition

Good. No holes. A number of pale stains. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
