Object Description
1845 Sampler by Eliza Golding. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Black paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, yellow, copper and brown. Verse entitled, ‘The lilly of the Valley’ reads, ‘Come my love and do not spurn.>From a little flower to learn.>Let your temper be as sweet.>As the lily at your feet.>Be as gentle be as mild,>Be a modest simple child.>Pretty lillies seem to be Emblems of humilty>And the saviour from above>Views a humble child with love.’.
