Object Description
Antique Sampler, 1846, by A Roberts. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with brown paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Decorative border. Colours blues, light brown, white, black, magenta, pinks, biege and red. Signed and dated, ‘A Roberts her work Aged 15 1846’. A wonderful set of motifs, including a farmhouse with animals and couple in the grounds, lions, Adam & Eve standing either side of the fruit laden tree of life, a snake coiled around its trunk, birds, stags, fruit baskets, a temple entitled ‘Tower of Babylon’, a ship and a church
