Antique Sampler, c.1790 Map Sampler by Mary Oxenford

Object Description

c.1790 Map Sampler by Mary Oxenford. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Simple line border. Colours pink, red, yellow, dark brown, greens, blues and black. Signed and dated ‘Work’d by Mary Oxenford December ?? 17??’. Map of England and Wales motif.

Object Condition

Generally good. No holes. Stains down the centre of the sampler. Stitch losses to the signature, date and county names. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
