Antique Sarouk carpets are amongst the most widely sought after decorative Persian room-size carpets. Their style, quality, and quiet formality have made them extremely popular in the West, particularly during the 19th century. These carpets originate in same the region of western Persia as Ziegler Sultanabad and Mahal carpets, and are distinguished by their tight weaves and excellent-quality wool.
This early 20th Century example has a remarkably high-grade weave, lending a crisp clarity to its drawing, and the rich dyes and creative designs typical of the finest Sarouk carpets of its period. The layout of this particular carpet boasts an unusually open and balanced composition for a piece of its age and type, compared to the traditional, more crowded, central medallion design. The charming dusky pink field works to compliment the wide array of vegetable-dyed tones, including various greens, ivory, light cornflower blue and terracotta accents, framed by a border of great proportions.
Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its borders and original fringes preserved on all sides – its colours have taken on a charming age-related patina.
