Object Description

A rare early Antique Sauj Bulagh long carpet in exceptional original condition and striking colours! This stunning carpet dates from circa 1850-1860 and they were woven from the Kurdish region in the far Northwest of Persia. They are known for combining elements of classical Persian drawings with a bold and vividly colourful village aesthetic. This Sauj Bulagh carpet draws floral elements organized in a lattice around a central rosette. Ultimately this may be a local variation of the classic Persian all-over ‘Herati pattern’ used in the 18th century. The wool is soft and lustrous and the colours are luminious against a deep indigo field. A beautiful carpet in great pile and in fantastic original condition.  The border is extremely wide too which is typical of earlier carpets from this region.
