Object Description

1834 sampler by Christian Annan of Perth, Scotland. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to card and wood with brown paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours navy blue, dark brown, greens and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-24, and family initials. Signed and dated ‘Christian Annan Perth 1834’. Placename Perth is a city in Scotland. Motifs, including a house, birds, flowers, fir trees, crowns, dogs and rabbits

Object Condition

Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ‘as is’.
