Object Description

Victorian Scottish Sampler, 1844, by Jean George. The sampler is worked in wool threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, green, light brown, pink, blue and black. Multiple alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Signed and dated, ‘JEAN GEORGE PITRODIE 1844’. Pitrodie is a town in Perthshire, Scotland. A scattering of motifs, including a house with a figure in the doorway, a dog, birds, potted flowering plants, a blossoming tree, a lady and a gentleman and peacocks. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to board. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Good. One hole to the border. Slight patchy staining on the left, barely visible. Some stitch losses to the signature, border, motifs and letters. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
