Object Description

An antique Shanks & Co wash basin supported on a cast iron bracket. This 19th century sink would look timeless and elegant mounted to the wall in a vintage style bathroom, in contemporary and modern homes alike.

Dating from the Victorian era, it has a wonderful rounded front edge with large proportions and a generous sized bowl. Perfect for use in a main bathroom or large ensuite.

Shanks & Co

Shanks & Co Ltd was founded by John Shanks in partnership with his brother Andrew in 1851 and quickly became an iconic British company. Based in Paisley, Scotland, together they went on to achieve worldwide success supplying and fitting sanitary ware, including on the Titanic and cruise ships Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth – making this original sink a quality find to become the focal point of any antique style bathroom.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Lightly worn glaze. There a couple of hairline cracks to the bowl. The basin has been tested and these do not leak. Taps turn freely but have not been tested. Plunger waste is present and designed with a rubber seal between brass; this is a snug fit. The seal is not perfect so there is a constant leak when the waste is in a closed position, but this is how it was designed and is operating as it should. The sink can hold a reasonable amount of water for approx 10 minutes.
