Object Description
Antique Shirvan Long Rug, c. 1890
3.34 x 1.20 m
Antique Shirvan carpets from the Caucasus are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols native to the region, and are highly sought after due to their expressive, playful character and use of natural dyed colours.
This wonderful 19th Century example has a wonderful palette, with a denim blue ground, and a wide variety of gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours in the drawing, ranging from ivory and sage green to red and yellow ochre tones. The composition employs a diamond pattern across the central field, creatively repeated in a variety of colours and forms, and framed by a wide, intricately designed four-part border.
A handsome piece, in very good condition for everyday use, with a minor age-related patina, with a tribal naivety that would lend character and charm to any setting.
