Object Description

A vibrant and beautiful antique Shirvan rug woven around 1880-1890 with lovely rich dyes. Lovely deep indigo blues and yellows, soft reds and greens used on the geometric designs.  The floral talish designs in the main field combined with the stylised star motifs make such an interesting rug.  Caucasian rugs are famed for their bold patterns and glorious colours, the late 19th century pieces have some of the best colours.

Shirvan is a region of Azerbaijan in the southeastern Caucasus. With the exception of a group of rugs woven in the vicinity of Baku, most Shirvans are found in small sizes, with examples from the southern part of the area around the town of Saliani more likely to be in the long, narrow format described in the West as runners.
