Antique Silver Dog Pepper, London 1869

Object Description

A charming novelty silver pepperette in the form of Punch and Judy’s dog “Toby”. Wearing his distinctive trademark bowler hat and the ruffle collar with tassles. Detachable head and glass eyes. Underneath there is a Victorian lozenge registration mark. Total weight 58 grams, just under 2 troy ounces. Height 10 cm. London 1869. Maker Charles Stuart Harris.

Biography – Charles Stuart Harris. This large manufacturing silversmiths, C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd, was started by John Mark Harris, spoon maker in 1817 and continued by John Robert Harris, probably J.M. Harris’s son from 1843 until 1852 as a silver spoon and fork manufacturer. In c.1852 the business passed to Charles Stuart Harris, electro spoon and fork maker and manufacturer of plated wares and silversmith. In 1885 he purchased the business of D.J. & C. Houle, manufacturing silversmiths. In 1897 the business became a limited company C.S. Harris and Sons Ltd and continued in business until 1933/34 when they were incorporated into I Freeman & Sons Ltd.

Object Literature

Often associated with traditional British seaside culture, Punch and Judy is a popular puppet show featuring Pulcinella (Mr. Punch) and his wife, Judy. The various episodes of Punch and Judy are performed in the spirit of outrageous comedy — often provoking shocked laughter — and are dominated by the anarchic clowning of Mr. Punch. The Punch and Judy theme was popularly represented in Victorian novelty silver, often condiments and jugs, and these have become highly prized collector’s items.

Object Condition

This lovely silver dog is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Stamped with a full and matching set of English silver underneath and on the collar.
