Object Description

A delightful George III antique silver serpentine-shaped tea caddy with delicate hand engraving.

The caddy still retains its original working lock and key.

To the underneath, along with the hallmarks, is an interesting and original memento mori inscription: “In Memory of Mrs Dory (Dorothy Dunn)”.

This caddy would have been purchased with monies left by her and, with a portion of that money, the beneficiary of her generosity would have bought this tea caddy.

Dorothy Dunn died on 25th of January 1780 in the village of Howden, Yorkshire, England.

Her gravestone is still extant in the impressive village church. An interesting tea caddy in excellent condition (see pictures).

Dimensions: height 14.5 cm, width 13.5 cm; weight 13.25 troy oz.
