Object Description

Antique silver German Art Nouveau centrepiece by Hermann Gladenbeck
German, c. 1900
Height 29cm, width 80cm, depth 43cm

This outstanding antique silver centrepiece is a remarkable showcase of the Art Nouveau movement, known for its graceful, organic forms and nature-inspired aesthetics. Introduced in the late 1800s, the Art Nouveau style is celebrated for its flowing lines, asymmetry, and romantic symbolism, all of which are beautifully embodied in this decorative masterpiece.

Designed by Rudolph Weichhardt and produced by the highly regarded German foundry Hermann Gladenbeck & Söhne, the piece exemplifies both artistic imagination and superb metalwork.

The design centres around an elongated, oval-shaped bowl that is dramatically flanked by two mythological figures. On one side, a merman reaches out to embrace a mermaid who leans back, echoing the themes of romance and movement found in much of Weichhardt’s work. The opposite side presents a mirrored version of the composition, this time placing the mermaid at the visual forefront. These sea creatures are set amidst a richly detailed array of aquatic plants, including reeds and water flowers, all cast in high-relief silver with exceptional precision.

Surrounding the central bowl are sculptural elements that mimic the fluidity of water – swirling forms, curved edges, and asymmetrical contours – all iconic features of the Art Nouveau period. The detachable silver insert includes twin handles.

A mirrored base lies beneath the figures, evoking the reflective surface of a tranquil body of water. This clever detail brings the entire piece to life, creating depth and capturing the luminous, mystical qualities of the sea.

This magnificent object bears a variety of marks, including ‘A. BOCL fec.’, ‘AKT.-GES. v. H. GLADENBECK u. SOHN.’, a ‘W’, and standard German silver hallmarks such as ‘800’ and the crescent moon with crown, confirming both the quality and authenticity of the piece.

Its striking form, mythological subject matter, and exceptional craftsmanship make the antique a standout decorative feature.

The silver weights approximately 16,300 grams.
