Object Description

A 19th century silver mounted ostrich egg with pedestal foot; the top having a finial in the form of a model ostrich bird. The silver is lavishly decorated with flowing scrolls, rosettes and foliate detail.

Height 29cm to top of finial.
Unmarked silver.
Probably Indian circa 1890.

Object Literature

Decorated ostrich eggs were considered rare and exotic items in antiquity. Throughout the ages they have been engraved, painted, and embellished with ivory, precious metals and faience fittings. These luxury items have been found throughout the Middle Eastern regions spreading through the Mediterranean and English examples exist from the 16th century.

Object Condition

Both the egg and silver are in very good condition.
