This antique tea and coffee service was produced in the late 19th century by Thomas Harwood & Sons, renowned English electroplate silver manufacturers based in Birmingham.
The set comprises a teapot on stand, a coffee pot, a sugar bowl, and a milker, each crafted in silver-plate using a variety of skilled techniques. Designed in a kettle drum form, the pieces are enhanced with rope mouldings and adorned with intricate motifs inspired by music, hunting, and aristocratic pursuits.
All items, apart from the teapot on stand, are supported by three finely cast lion mask and paw feet. Three pieces feature spouts modelled as roaring lion heads, while the teapot rests on more prominent lion legs emerging from beautifully detailed lion skin forms, reinforcing the set’s hunting-inspired design.
The milker and teapot are fitted with flush-hinged lids, each crowned with drumstick finials atop a music book and laurel leaf garland, emphasizing the musical theme that unites the ensemble. Handles are elegantly shaped as coiled belts with buckles, combining functional design with decorative flair.
Each piece bears the maker’s mark along with additional hallmarks, confirming its authenticity.
Expertly crafted, this tea and coffee service is a remarkable acquisition for collectors with an interest in music, hunting, or English silver.
