Object Description

A magnificent and large oval Victorian two-handled tray, won by the last Irish men’s Wimbledon champion and the first lady to ever win Olympic gold.
The tray has a scroll border, the body is is beautifully engraved and the centre has the following inscription: “Lawn-Tennis Championship of Ireland, Mixed Doubles 1st Prize, H.S. Mahony & Miss Cooper, All Comers singles 2nd Prize, H.S. Mahony, 1895-96.”
Harold Segerson Mahony was the last Irish winner at Wimbledon (1896 Championship). Having been being born in Scotland, he was the the last Scottish born man to win Wimbledon until the victory of Sir Andy Murray in 2013.
Charlotte Cooper was a five-time Wimbledon Champion (1895, 1896, 1898, 1901, 1908). Cooper competed in 11 Wimbledon finals. She was the first woman in history to win an Olympic Gold medal – this was at the 1900 Paris Olympics.
