Antique Silver Wine Coolers, London 1851

Object Description

A superb pair of antique sterling silver wine coolers of campana form with cast wrythen handles. Fully complete with matching sleeves and covers in sterling silver. The plain bodies have fine quality applied grape and vine detail. To the front each has an engraved monogram of entwined initials in old fashioned script.
Total weight 5344 grams, 171.8 troy ounces.
Height 31.5 cm. Spread across handles 29 cm.
All pieces hallmarked for London 1851.

SAMUEL HAYNE & DUDLEY CATER
Samuel Hayne, apprenticed to Thomas Wallis as goldsmith January 1804, first mark entered as plateworker, in partnership with brother Jonathan Hayne, address 16 Red Lion St, Clerkenwell in July 1836. Dudley Cater, apprenticed to Jonathan Hayne of Red Lion St, Clerkenwell in March 1823, first mark entered as plateworker, in partnership with Samuel Hayne, July 1836. Died circa 1881-85.

Object Literature

Most wine coolers hold one single bottle and have a detachable liner and rim. They usually have handles because the condensation can make the outside very slippery. The earliest silver wine coolers are very rare and date back to circa 1700.

Object Condition

These stunning bottle holders are in very good condition. All stamped with matching English silver hallmarks. The ornament has crisp detail. The buckets are stamped number 1 and 2. The canopies are stamped number 3 and 4.
