Object Description

An antique Tudor style stained glass panel attributed to Williams, Gamon & Co dating to circa 1900. Burtonwood Brewery, Warrington.

The scene depicts a Pre-Raphaelite style and secular image, possibly depicting the Field of the Cloth of Gold where Henry VIII of England met Francis I of France with the intention to improve relations between the two rival kingdoms.

This specific image showcases two men on horseback thought to be eastern traders of the time, who were thought to be in the area for the events festivities.

The stained glass is an impressive abstract Tudor style and the talented craftsmanship of its maker.

Field of the Cloth of Gold

Cardinal Thomas Wolsey orchestrated the event and Henry and Francis met south of Calais for eighteen days of tournaments and diplomacy.

Feasts, masquerades and religious services were set amidst a sea of specially built tents, banqueting houses and ‘portable palaces’.

We have a series of these panels available depicting various scenes.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Couple of hanging hooks to the top. Panel is displayed in a late 20th century painted MDF backlit display case. Each one has a power cable coming from it to a transformer and then to three pin UK plug. LED light source.
