Object Description
A lovely rare small size antique Sultanabad rug, with a delightful abstract ‘Boteh’ design in the main field. Woven with a deep indigo blue background, with subtle ‘abrash’ (Persian term for dye change) which means the weaver used varying wool in blue. Over 100 plus years the natural dyes have faded beautifully, which adds character and depth to the blue colour. The minor borders of gentle yellow and warm red work well to balance the overall appearance and creates a lovely rare antique rug.
The condition is extremely good, with a soft and light handle, and an excellent medium high wool pile all over. No old areas of restoration are apparent and it has been washed ready for use on the floor. Supplied with our sturdy underlay included in the price, to prevent it from moving around on all floor types, such as sisal, wooden floors and carpet.
Also on one of the images you can see a stencilled number in white on the back of the rug. This is an old Perez number, back in early 20th century the Perez company had a rug shop in London, they used to stencil these numbers on the back of their rugs when imported to their shop. Quite a fascinating piece of history, we may come across an antique Perez rug a few times a year.
