Object Description
A delightful Victorian ebony go to bed, having a castellated top with a mother of pearl inlay surrounding the central hole for the match. The baluster body is in two sections with a screw thread. The interior was used for the storage of matches and the bottom has turned concentric circles for striking the match. These charming items were used in place of candles (which were expensive) and gave enough light to go to bed. They were also used to melt sealing wax for letters and documents. The whole has a dark colour and excellent patination.
