Object Description
A rare Victorian deportment board made from a solid plank of walnut, sometimes called back boards. According to Pinto, these were a must for Victorian and Georgian children, who had to stand for a certain time each day with the board held horizontally behind their backs. The handles looped through the child’s crooked elbows, therefore holding the shoulders well back to straighten or correct their stance. The whole has a medium colour and a pleasing patination.
