Object Description

A small yew wood pomander, which separates with a wood screw thread. The two vacant sections, each have 25 perforated holes for releasing the scent, often contained in a small sponge, which fitted the interior. Pomanders of various forms were used from Medieval times onward and had aromatic substances used by the wealthy to protect them from infection and evil smells. The whole has an excellent colour and grain, as often found in yew wood items, retaining a patination.
