Object Description

A most interesting American spice box and containers, made of bass wood and edged with tin strapwork. The circular container is titled ‘Spices’. The interior, containing seven circular and one larger spice boxes, are edged with tin to the top and base, each lettered on the lids and sides, Mace, Nutmeg, Ginger, Mustard, Cinnamon, Cloves, Pepper and Allspice. The central container (pepper) has an impressed stamp on the underside, Newark N.J. (New Jersey) surrounded by indistinct lettering. Newark is the most populous city in the United States state of New Jersey and the seat of Essex County, and is part of the New York metropolitan area. It was settled in 1666 by puritans from New Haven Colony and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The whole has an excellent honey colour and retains a patination.
