Object Description
An extremely interesting Swedish burr wood bowl, carved from the solid with an integral open forked handle inscribed Solleftea and dated 1917.
Solleftea, a city in Northern Sweden, is located at the lowest rapids of the Angermanalven, making it the last outpost to which it was possible to sail. It obtained the status of a market town in 1902, before finally being granted a town charter in 1917, therefore making it a city. This fine bowl, no doubt commemorates this important occasion in the town’s history.
The base is signed with a name in pencil, probably of the carver, with carved initials E.O. and the number 6 or letter B? It has a wonderful rich pale colour and patination.
