Object Description

A good quality pair of Victorian table top letter racks, of dovetailed construction, each having three graduated compartments with dipped centres and wavy edges, seated on a slightly protruding rounded foot. Each has a bone maker’s plate, Parkins and Gotto, 24-25 Oxford Street London. The pair have an excellent colour, grain and patination and are in fine condition.

Parkins and Gotto was formed by William Parkins and Henry Gotto in early 1845 in London at 2 Hanway Street and 25 Oxford Street and were mainly stationers but also sold a wide variety of goods, including dressing cases, luggage, sporting goods and toys. In 1860 The Society of Arts awarded them a silver medal for their writing case for its utility, durability and cheapness. In 1871 they advertised that they had the largest stock in Europe. They received Royal approval and supplied stationery to the Court in 1893.
