Object Description

An oak strickle for sharpening a scythe or sickle in the field. They covered the surface with bacon fat and then sand or gritstone. Scythes or sickles became blunt very quickly, so this was a necessary tool to be used on the spot. The whole has a dark colour and retains a patination.
