Object Description

Woven in the late 19th Century in Anatolia, Turkey, this is a large and open geometric design antique Ushak carpet with rare green, brownish tones.   Ushak been producing since the start of the Ottoman period (1300-1922).  The mid to late 19th century examples such as this became more open and decorative in design and were commissioned more for the Western market in the US and Europe and have since rivalled the look of the famous Ziegler carpets from Persia.

Our home visits are available nationwide, we love showing our antique carpets and rugs in situ.This exceptional antique Ushak can also be viewed at our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey by appointment too.

Object Condition

In excellent condition all over the dyes have mellowed over the last 130 years, with soft saffron yellow tones, muted pinks, and natural off white wool, all being used for this early design Ushak.  The border design consists of vines with leaf motifs all connected and flowing around the main field, flanked by two soft pink minor borders.  A fabulous palette of colours and ancient designs.
