Description:
This is a fine quality antique Georgian oak Welsh dresser, originating from Anglesey / Caernarfonshire (North Wales), displaying a stunning colour, circa 1830, in excellent condition. This Welsh dresser incorporates a shaped rack is constructed with the original wide pine backboards (a sign of quality), a breakfront canopy (the breakfront design replicated on the shelves) escalloped detail below. The sides of the rack are decorated with triangular shaped fruitwood and ebony inlay panels to the top and bottom of walls, interspersed with finely reeded Corinthian columns. The rack is constructed with three grooved horizontal racks that can support plates. The top of the base also has provision for plate storage when the rack is in place. The rack rests upon the dresser base on large strong sides which secure into the top of the base. Below, the breakfront dresser base features a solid oak top and frame, with a central column of working drawers flanked by a cupboard and a drawer each side, with decorative finely shaped quarter columns and matching triangular shaped fruitwood and ebony inlay panels. The drawer fonts are decorated with oak geometric inlay and cock-beading and the original bone key escutcheons. The doors are decorated with fielded panels. It is nice to see that this dresser has all its drawers working. Quite often, similar dressers have feature faux / decorative drawers down the centre but this dresser boasts all working drawers, which is a nice feature. The two cupboards feature octagonal shaped inset panels, encompassed by triangular shaped inlaid corners and the original steel lever locks, with working key. The drawers and cupboard doors are feature old Victorian replacement brass knobs, which are the style of knobs that would have originally been used (it was common for handles and knobs to be replaced, to stay in line with the changing fashions and trends).

The drawers are pine lined, butt-jointed, are smooth running and close flush to the frame. The two drawers above the cupboard doors never had lever locks because they were designed with a secret locking mechanism (a sprung wooden catch below the drawer bottom needs to be pushed up from within the cupboard, to open the drawer). This original secret locking mechanism is more a novelty than a secure locking mechanism. The top central drawer retains the original steel locks, with working key (the central drawers below were not designed with locks, but are decorated with faux key holes). The dresser stands on the original shaped bracket feet, with decorative fretwork feet brackets. This dresser boasts its original polish and patination, displaying a rich oxblood colour, which has been created from 200 years of care.

This dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.

Provenance:
We believe this Welsh dresser originates from the county of Caernarfonshire or Island of Anglesey in North Wales, United Kingdom. The dresser is similar to dresser constructed in the neighbouring island of Anglesey, specifically the village of Talwrn, Wales, UK. Talwrn was renowned for its community of woodworkers who made distinctive furniture from the early 19th Century to the early 20th Century. The pieces are typically decorated with inlaid spots, triangles and diamonds and finished with quarter-sawn oak. This dresser depicts the same overall design but without the inlaid spots, triangles and diamonds. This style of dresser is highly sought after, decorative and functional items that would compliment any country kitchen or dining room. This particular dresser came from a farmhouse, near Conwy, where it had remained in the same family since it was made, until now. It is therefore the first time it has come onto the market for sale, which makes it a particularly special find.
