Object Description

Archibald Knox. Made by Mary Seton Watts for Liberty and Co. A rare and completely original pair of Arts and Crafts terracotta ‘Olaf’ planters with impressed Liberty makers marks and probably the best examples of Olaf pots I have ever come across.

This was one of the first plant pot designs by Knox, a Celtic knot design inspired from ancient Celtic crosses where he grew up on the Isle of Man. The pots were made by Mary Seton Watts of Compton Potteries who was married to the famous painter G F Watts. Mary Seaton Watts won awards from the Royal Botanical Society (Gold) and The Royal Horticultural society (Silver), for her garden designs.

The designs here feature in the Liberty & Co ‘Yule Tide Gifts’ catalogue in 1903-4. For reference see ‘ Archibald Knox & Mary Seaton Watts, Modern Celtic Art Garden Pottery. By Veronica Franklin Gould’.

They are both in mint condition, no cracks at all and they still resonate like bells. There are a few little nicks which I have shown clearly in the images here. You can see every side in the pirouette of images assembled here for you.
