Object Description
An Antique art deco Chinese carpet with a beautiful muted palette unlike most of the art deco Chinese rugs which were more often woven with very bright colours. The pale blue border is charming and works well with the additional sparse floral motifs, birds and butterflies which float into the main field. The main field colour is a sandy beige/biscuit tone. Art Deco Chinese carpets were produced from the 1910’s to the 1940’s. Prior to the 1920’s often the designs and colours were similar to the classical two tone blue and white antique carpets from China. After the 1920’s the weaving workshops started to experiment with vibrant colours using subtle open designs of birds and flowers.
This antique Art Deco Chinese carpet is in good condition with only minimal wear or foundation knots showing which you can see in the photographs. There is no damage to this carpet just small areas of wear consistent with the age. The dyes are good and it has no obvious stains or marks. A very decorative and subtle carpet.
