Object Description

A beautiful Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring c.1930 designed as two stylised peacock feathers in a vertical cross over design, the ‘eyes’ of each feather formed of either a hexagonal step cut sapphire or diamond, above each is a fan shape of baguette diamonds and beneath a double row of baguette diamonds forming the ring shoulders, all set in platinum. This is a lovely design that uses the stylised motifs of peacock tail feathers to great effect. The peacock was a hugely popular figure of the earlier Art Nouveau era that carried over into Art Deco with the curvilinear forms replaced, as we can see here, by a more geometric and angular interpretation. The sharp corners and step cut faceting of the main gems along with the fan-shaped outline formed of rectangular shaped gems, is typical of this period.
