Object Description
An exceptional Continental, probably Austrian, Art Nouveau Brass lidded casket with a molded portrait of a maiden dating from around 1900. The heavily made casket is of rectangular form and stands raised on four stylized claw shaped feet with incised corner banding decorated with raised stud work. The panels are all decorated in individual patterning in relief with molded scrolling and tall floral stems in typical period style set against a fine brown leather ground. Some of the stems have a copper colored contrasting finish. The front panel has a lock escutcheon. The hinged cover is fitted with a heavy swing handle and is molded with a bust length portrait of young maiden in period style with flowers in her hair. The inner casket is lined in its original green velvet and there is a small impressed makers mark to the base which we have included in out images. Very much in the style and quality of a top maker and one to be seen to be truly appreciated.
