Object Description

Ca. 540-525 BC

A beautiful black-figure pottery kylix decorated on the exterior walls of both sides. The vessel consists of a hemispherical body with two lug handles, standing on a high pedestal foot. The exterior decoration features a central band adorned with a swan with its wings spread. The animal is naturalistically rendered, with hatching added to simulate feathers. The swan is flanked by two confronted cows with stylised bodies, featuring small, thin legs and large, bulky bodies. As a final touch, graceful palmettes with added red slip adorn each end of the scene. The tondo is painted with a bichrome ring. Restored. For similar, see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 06.1021.157.
