Object Description
Attractive c. 1920 Cuenca Carpet
5.92 x 3.62 cm
Spanish carpets such as this one represent some of the most highly prized and time-honoured European weavings, tracing their lineage back to the period in which much of Spain was part of the Islamic world. Early pieces are widely sought after by collectors, and both 19th and 20th century examples make excellent room-size decorative rugs.
An attractive Cuenca carpet, inspired by earlier English and French weavings of the 18th and 19th Centuries. This 1920s example, uncommon in this large format, features a balanced palette in well-aged vegetable-dyed colours, with a unique design, in tones of muted gold with sky blue accents, all framed by a border of generous proportions. The artist has used a simple, open composition in the central field, rather than the traditional central medallion motif, lending the carpet a sense of relaxed elegance.
Retaining its original outer borders on all sides, this piece is in very good condition for everyday use, with some minor age-related restoration, which has been done to a high standard.
A beautiful piece, and a rare find in this large format, to add character to any setting.
