Object Description
A fine Ancient Roman Imperial provincial bronze As, minted under Augustus and Agrippa in the Nemausus, Gaul mint. The obverse of the coin features the back to back heads of Augustus and Agrippa, his deputy, lieutenant, and son-in-law. Agrippa, facing left, wears a rostral crown, an ancient Roman naval crown adorned with the rostrum of a ship. Augustus, facing right, wears an oak wreath upon his head. The accompanying legend reads IMP DIVI F, short for Imperator Divi Filius, meaning Imperator (Supreme commander), son of the divine. The reverse displays a crocodile, chained to the palm behind. There is a wreath in the upper left field, with long ties extending behind the palm. The legend COL-NEM, short for Colonia Nemausus, the City of Nemausus, where this coin was minted, is written across the field.
