Object Description
Engraved trade card for London copperplate manufacturer, Benjamin Whittow who’s business was first recorded in 1771.
There are several variations of this design. One version is included by Ambrose Heal in his ‘London Tradesmen’s Cards of the Xviii Century : An Account of Their Origin and Use’ (1925) (page 73 plate XXI). The present design is simplified and does not include the figures on the upper filigree.
The inscription reads:
‘Benjamin Whittow Copper and Brass Plate Maker At the Crown in New Street Shoe Lane, London. Makes Copper and Brass Plates in the neatest manner. ‘
